Can We Rebuild Trust in Housing After We've Let Grenfell Happen?

About

We are now nearly eight years on from the Grenfell tragedy, a total of 2,850 days, and yet nearly 5,000 buildings across England are still known to have life-critical fire safety defects. Seventy-two lives lost…it’s a number that still sends shivers.

We have convened a meeting where we will be joined by Peter Apps, author of the award-winning book "Show Me The Bodies | How We Let Grenfell Happen", that dives deep into the systemic failures that led to one of the most tragic fire disasters in recent history. Following the publication of the government's response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, Peter, who has covered the inquiry from the start, will set out the key findings and the gaps and questions that remain.

Few of the deeply worrying findings shared in the Building Safety Remediation data release, state that as at 19 December 2024:

• Only 6% of affected buildings had completed remediation, and many of those still await building control sign-off
• Around 15% were undergoing works
• A staggering 50% had remediation works planned but not yet started
• And 30% had no clear or complete plans in place

Regular reviews of regulations, always developing professionally, and adopting new tech are key to staying ahead of the game. The lessons from Grenfell, they can’t be forgotten – they have to be a constant reminder to put safety and accountability first in the sector. This takes everyone; from all levels of the business, to make a culture of safety to help prevent any more tragedies. It’s not just about rules, it’s about having a different mindset.
