THIS IS AN IN-PERSON DINNER IN HONG KONG.
We cordially invite you to our next Winmark/CIO Connect evening briefing, where we will be exploring the dangers of data immersion with our esteemed speaker Anthony ‘Tas’ Tasgal.
Tas is UK based, a graduate from the University of Oxford, and a man of many lanyards. Author of 6 books, the most recent being on consumer behaviour, he is well known as a speaker on storytelling as a powerful and poorly adopted tool to improve both business and personal communications. Tas runs his own training company and is a Course Director for the CIM [Chartered Institute of Marketing], the Market Research Society, the Institute of Internal Communication, the AAR (ad agency/client relationship advisers) and the Civil Service College, running courses on Storytelling, Behavioural Economics, Insightment and Creative Briefing amongst others in the UK, US, China, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden and UAE.
The business world has fallen in love with the idea that data is the new gold. However, deep insight needs to be exercised in the way data is presented and viewed, as well as the more alarming changes being brought about by the data overload being experienced by us in an increasingly digital first and smart phone addicted world. The lessons on how numeric data can be misrepresented are well covered in the FT writer Tim Harford in his book “How to make the world add up; 10 rules of how to think differently about numbers”.
But a broader concern now being raised is how information’s tendency to count, measure and define has permeated the self and society…reaching into health, education, Netflix recommendations, human rights and beyond. This captures the essence of the modern workplace, where data often overshadows individual stories and experiences.
The scope of our discussion will cover;
- Is there an overemphasis on quantification where workplaces prioritize metrics, sometimes at the expense of well-being and creativity.
- is there an erosion of personal narrative such that we feel less connected to our work when personal stories and contexts are ignored.
- Do we need to reclaim narratives/experiences by reintroducing authentic narratives to make workplaces more humane and engaging.
