CIO Career Paths

What’s the next step on the career path for ambitious CIOs?

As businesses adapt to the digital economy, any COO must be able to demonstrate significant IT leadership skills in order to be successful. Businesses of all sizes are now scrambling to digitise their legacy business models and leverage data to improve operations and customer experiences. This large scale move to digital business presents a significant opportunity for CIOs, as now more than ever, enterprises are looking for experienced IT leaders to drive this operational transformation.

Ambitious, forward-thinking CIOs have experience leading such initiatives, and in most cases are obvious choices for the role. Indeed, a 2016 study showed that 84% of COO positions were filled through internal promotion and in the majority of cases it was the CIO that got the job.

But what makes a successful COO? In this network meeting, our speakers will share their experiences on how they transitioned into a COO role (or joint role) in two different industries. They will explore the opportunities and challenges they faced and how they managed the transition and the skills and knowledge required, including:

Demonstrating operational effectiveness beyond IT

  • Using the cross functional nature of the CIO role to build bridges and break down silos
  • Socialising how rapid-moving and progressively more complex technology themes can translate in to business value and results
  • Building relationships in the C-suite to get buy-in and turn ideas into viable plans
  • Deliver successful outcomes and manage both performance and change.
