The language of Risk: Articulating risk concepts

About

What does risk mean to your organisation? Risk has often been side-lined as a tick box exercise, reviewed annually but very rarely developed and only ever brought into the limelight in times of crisis. Not understanding & addressing your risk effectively can impact the business in the short, medium & long-term.

In this session we will discuss the importance of making risk a key part of the board strategy, exploring some key areas for consideration including:

  • What’s the purpose of board risk committees and do they really add value?
  • Objective-centric versus risk-centric approaches to risk management
  • Is it better to risk optimise or risk minimise - is it really possible to set a meaningful risk appetite?
  • Cognitive bias and uncertainty – can the Board really rely on the risk information they are provided?
  • What’s the role of the CRO – management’s friend or devil’s advocate?
  • Hunting black swans – good sport or a waste of time?
